The rise of the welfare state is one of the most important novelties in the 20th century. With this conference we intend to explore the possibility of studying the emergence of the welfare state from the perspective of comparative conceptual history. We will adress questions such as: How can we study the relationship between political change and conceptual change from a comparative perspective? What is the history of the concept of ’the welfare state’? And perhaps most important: Does the welfare state have a language of its own?

Conceptualizing the World

International conference in Oslo September 13-16 2011.

As a starting point for this conference we want to suggest an alternative approach to the concept and the discourse of “globalization”. Irrespective of both normative issues and conflicting temporal scales we take globalization to mean the emergence, appearance and/or production of the world as an object of human experience and practice. The aim of the conference is to study how different sets of concepts, representations and methodologies, within different languages, disciplines, discourses or cultures, react and contribute to this emergence.

Seminar description

“History is past politics; politics is present history”. For many years, this statement by Sir John Seeley represented everything that was wrong with the “traditional paradigm”. Historians had to go beyond politics. However, the historical study of politics survived, and in recent years, many historians have sought not to overcome the study of politics, but to expand it. The German trend towards a “new political history” (neue Politikgeschichte) seems especially worth mentioning.
As a successor to the 2010 seminar on the more general idea of a new political history, we invite Ph.D.-students as well as senior scholars to explore the more limited topic of the role ideas in political history, especially how ideologies and world views influence political processes and how discussions and positions outside the political sphere influence political history. We have invited four keynote speakers who will bring together methods and insights from intellectual history, political science, and literary theory. In addition to the keynote lectures, there will be two sessions open for Ph.D. presentations of ongoing work on a relevant topic. In case you have a proposal for a presentation, please let us know as soon as possible. There will be issued a diploma (4 ECTS) for such presentations (2,5 ECTS for participation without presentation).

The seminar is an open event with no seminar fee. The organisers will arrange for lunch on both days of the seminar as well as a seminar dinner (please register), and the convenors can assist with practical matters regarding travel and accommodation. Seit 2009 verwahrt das Deutsche Dokumentationszentrum für
Kunstgeschichte - Bildarchiv Foto Marburg die Materialien zur
politischen Ikonographie und Ikonologie aus dem Nachlass des
2006 verstorbenen Historikers Reinhart Koselleck, während der
schriftliche Nachlass in das Deutsche Literaturarchiv nach
Marbach gelangt ist. Beide Institutionen haben die Aufgabe
übernommen in enger Kooperation diese Dokumente der Wissenschaft
zugänglich zu machen, Forschung dazu anzuregen und selbst zu
betreiben. Nach der im Frühjahr 2009 in Marbach veranstalteten
Tagung zum Thema "Sprache und Geschichte" steht in Marburg vom
18.-20. November 2010 die Bildforschung des Historikers im
Mittelpunkt. Unter dem von Reinhart Koselleck mitgeprägten und
programmatisch vertretenen Begriff der "politischen Ikonologie"
sollen erste Einsichten zu dem bis dahin noch nicht
erschlossenen Bestand in Marburg präsentiert werden, vor allem
aber soll das Interesse des Historikers am Bild und seinem
politischen Potenzial im weiteren interdisziplinären Feld der
einschlägigen kunsthistorischen, historischen,
ethnologisch-kulturwissenschaftlichen und philosophischen
Debatten behandelt werden.

Die nach Marburg gelangten Bestände umfassen in der Hauptsache
teils eigenhändige, teils aus anderen Quellen bezogene
Fotografien und dazu gehörige Notizen zur Geschichte und
Verbreitung des Kriegs- und Reiterdenkmals vorzugsweise in
Europa. Die Schwerpunkte der eigenwillig geordneten, über
Jahrzehnte zusammengetragenen Sammlung liegen in Deutschland
und Frankreich. Zeitungsausschnitte, Postkarten und eigene
Schnappschüsse zeugen vom umfassenden kunst- und
kulturgeschichtlichen Interesse Kosellecks, aber auch von
seiner bis in die Prozesse des Alltags reichenden
Aufmerksamkeit für die politische Wirksamkeit von Bildern in
Geschichte und Gegenwart. In einigen Aufsätzen hat Koselleck
seine Überlegungen dazu ausformuliert, es haben Tagungen
stattgefunden, deren Beiträge teilweise publiziert wurden.
Viele Argumentationslinien sind aber erst angelegt und
manche interessante Idee ist im Stadium einer Notiz
verblieben.

Die sammelnde und kommentierende Auseinandersetzung des als
Begriffshistoriker profilierten Forschers mit dem Bild in
dessen politischer Funktion kann als Reaktion auf die von
Koselleck früh erkannte und selbst erlebte Wirkmacht des
Bildes verstanden werden. Deren Erforschung suchte er in
der Zusammenarbeit mit Historikern und Kunsthistorikern
immer wieder voranzutreiben. Der Nachlass zeugt von diesem
die disziplinären Grenzen immer schon überschreitenden
Erkenntnisinteresse, das in vieler Hinsicht heute aktueller
ist denn je. Kosellecks Interesse an der politischen
Instrumentalisierung des Bildes, beispielhaft greifbar im
Denkmal, und seine damit zu verbindenden
begriffsgeschichtlichen Überlegungen geben Anlass, über die
Ursache und Wirkung politischer Bilder weiter nachzudenken.
In den unterschiedlichsten Formen bedient sich auch heutige
Politik - wie Politik seit jeher - der Bildmedien. Doch
erhält dieses Feld im 21. Jahrhundert eine besondere
Aktualität, indem die Bildmedien buchstäblich als
Kriegsschauplätze genutzt werden. Seit dem Anschlag auf das
World Trade Center am 11. September 2001 wird verstärkt
diskutiert, inwiefern dergleichen Attentate nach Maßgabe
ihrer visuellen Wirksamkeit in den Bildmedien geplant und
durchgeführt werden. Die sogenannten neuen, asymmetrischen
Kriege müssen als Phänomene der Globalisierung verstanden
werden, die sich in einem Krieg der Bilder niederschlagen.
Dies legt es nahe, eine Erforschung des politischen
Bildgebrauchs aus den verschiedensten Blickpunkten und unter
Einbeziehung unterschiedlicher geisteswissenschaftlicher
Disziplinen zu betreiben.

Die Fragen, welche Reinhart Koselleck an das Bild richtete,
an das politisch instrumentalisierte, in politischer Absicht
geschaffene Kunstwerk, aber auch der Umgang, den er selbst
mit Bildern pflegte, können in diesem Sinn Ausgangspunkt
sein für eine historiographische Kontexualisierung und
Aktualisierung einer an der Dimension des Politischen
interessierten Kulturwissenschaft, welche das Bild in seiner
politischen Aussage- und Gestaltungskraft im Sinne einer
"politischen Ikonologie" ernst nimmt.

A Summer Course for the History of Concepts and Metaphors

and a Workshop: Concepts of Art in History

The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute announces a one-week summer course and workshop to be held August 22–26, 2010.

The central concepts of a culture are not fixed and timeless entities. Rather, they are molded by the political and social contexts in which they are created and applied, and change within them. At the same time, they structure and constitute the extralinguistic experience and reality to which they refer. The History of Concepts is thus an approach to the study of key concepts, investigating the ways in which language functions and is employed in cultural, political, social, and geographic contexts, in the past and present.

The course (free of charge) will be conducted in English and is meant chiefly for graduate students and scholars whose fields of research and interests relate to the concepts of the Arts, in the Arts and around the Arts, to their history and their various contexts. A reading list will be sent a few weeks in advance to the participants. At the workshop, interested participants will be afforded an opportunity to present their own research for feedback and criticism by the instructors and other participants.

Conceptual History: Concepts, Metaphors and Discourses.

The Thirteenth Annual Conference of the History of Political and Social Concepts Group. Moscow, 16 – 18 September 2010.

The 13th annual conference will be held in Moscow from the 16th to the 18th September 2010. This conference is organised by HPSCG and the Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow, in cooperation with European University in Saint-Petersburg and the German Historical Institute in Moscow.

In recent years, the focus of the HPSCG annual conferences has been on questions dealing with key concepts in different historical and social contexts, the specifics of transfers of concepts in various cultures in the world, and new theoretical and methodological challenges in the study of the history of concepts.

At the 13th annual conference of the HPSCG, we plan to examine theoretical questions concerning the links between key concepts and metaphors, as well as on historical semantics as a method. We intend not only to consider the distinction between the methods used by German, French, and English-speaking historians of political and social concepts, but also to discuss various research practices that combine different approaches to the historical study of concepts. The crucial historical role of transnational socio-political concepts in state-building and shaping collective identities has been a prominent theme for the HPSCG since its beginning. At the 13th annual conference, we want to explore specific dimensions of the reception, translation and adaptation of concepts such as ‘state,’ ‘democracy,’ ‘liberty,’ ‘citizenship,’ ‘nation,’ and ‘civilization’ in different natural languages and diverse cultures in the “East” and the “West.” One of the major conference themes will be the state of the Russian studies in the field of conceptual history.

The 13th annual conference will be organised around the following issues:

• Concepts and Metaphors: time, theory and method

Within the framework of the conference, we plan to make clear some of the similarities and the differences between fundamental concepts and metaphors. Thus a special focus will be placed on the symbiotic relationships between conceptual history and the history of metaphors. We would like to invite researchers to a debate on the cognitive status, possibilities and limits of historical semantics. We also hope to discuss the potential for interaction between researchers in corpus linguistics, metaphorology, conceptual history, and historical discourse analysis, and to place an emphasis on the problem of how to relate linguistic materials with the historical and social contexts.

• East and West: transfers, entanglements and comparisons

We intend to investigate what might help in the comparison of histories of political and social concepts in different natural languages. Special attention needs to be given to conceptual changes and inventions, the variety of conceptual configurations and to semantic fields. In the debates on conceptual transfers from one culture to another, it is preferable to consider conceptualization as a controversial process, rather than to emphasize final forms of the concepts produced. We want to focus on the conceptual struggle and the complex shifts in meaning of key concepts in urgent historical moments, and entanglements of European, Asian and African semantics in the historical dynamics.

• Conceptual history in Russia: past, present and future

A number of researchers in Russia have used German, English and French theoretical approaches to the conceptual history. We wish to explore some features of the application of historical semantics as a method in Russian social sciences. An important standpoint will be to emphasize the complexity of the problems of transfers and translations of “Western” concepts in different Russian historical and social contexts. We will highlight the diverse modernist and anti-modernist strategies formed by the battles around concepts.

CALL TO ORGANIZE PANEL SESSIONS

Submissions for applications to organize a panel session for the conference are invited. Interested individuals/groups should submit expressions of interest which include a synopsis of no more than 200 words outlining the duration, title, aims, and content of the proposed session.
All proposals will be reviewed by the Organizing Committee. Presentations will be selected to provide a program that offers comprehensive and diverse treatment of issues relating to the
conference theme.

Text-mining in the Digital Humanities: The Interface between Conceptual History, Critical Discourse Analysis and Corpus Linguistics.

The aim of this interdisciplinary workshop is to explore the potential for collaboration between researchers in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Corpus Linguistics (CL) and Conceptual History (CH), the study of key socio-political concepts in their historical context (see http://www.concepta-net.org/conceptual_history).

Recent studies by mainly Lancaster-based researchers have suggested the methodological synergy that can result from combining CDA and corpus-linguistic approaches. Meanwhile, the discourse-historical approach in CDA developed by Ruth Wodak (Lancaster) overlaps with CH in its study of the discursive construction of collective identities that can themselves be seen as concepts, each with their own history. Finally, the development of increasingly sophisticated software programs, such as Lancaster’s UCREL Semantic Analysis System, opens up exciting new research possibilities for mining the ever-increasing number of historical texts available in digital form. The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for researchers in CH, CDA and CL to discover how they might benefit from mutual collaboration. It should also be of interest to anyone in the Humanities and Social Sciences who works with texts and/or deals with basic socio-political concepts, including collective identities.

Guest speakers will include Jan Ifversen (Head of Institute for History and Area Studies, Aarhus University), Hans-Erich Boedeker (Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Berlin), both from the History of Political and Social Concepts Group, and Gerlinde Mautner (Vienna University of Economics and Business), who pioneered the use of corpus-linguistic techniques in CDA. The workshop will also include demonstrations of various software programs.

Abstracts (200-300 words)

We invite the submission of proposals for 20-minute papers from scholars working in:

· Conceptual History (including historical semantics and metaphor history)

· Critical Discourse Analysis (including critical metaphor analysis and cognitive approaches)

· Corpus Linguistics (including historical text-mining and keyword extraction)

Possible topic areas for papers include, but are not limited to:

Case studies in using historical corpora
Concepts, texts and discourses
Conceptual history vs historical semantics
Conceptual contestation / conceptual innovation
Critical metaphor analysis and cognitive approaches
Different national approaches
Identities as concepts
The importance of context(s)
Reconstructing semantic fields
The role of concepts in the discourse-historical approach
What corpus linguistics can and cannot do
What makes a key word key?
